Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The Playa del Carmen government, in coordination with the state government, is working to find alternatives to provide roads to connect rural communities. Communities such as Vida and Esperanza, among other edijo areas, are currently without a direct connection to the city of Playa del Carmen.

Deyanira Martínez Estrada, the Secretary of Social Justice and Citizen Participation, says they are looking into creating direct roads. She explained that during the last public hearing in Puerto Aventuras, they agreed to begin analyzing two possible routes.
One would be a road that connects residents to the rest of the municipality through Puerto Aventuras. A second road being analyzed is one that could cross the ejido to Benito Juárez Avenue near the municipal jail.
Currently, the only available route to access Playa del Carmen is the El Tintal Highway, which is a toll road. That toll fee, she says, incurs an additional expense for rural families.
Martínez Estrada said the construction of such roads requires the active participation of ejidos (communal landowners) so everyone involved can reach easement agreements since the objective, under the instructions of Mayor Estefanía Mercado, is to reach every corner of the municipality and effectively address the needs of the population.
