Arresting officers under investigation for abuse during Cozumel eviction

Cozumel, Q.R. — The Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) reported the immediate suspension of arresting officers during an eviction from their positions. On Thursday, the Cozumel Gobierno and Seguridad Ciudadana Cozumel (SSC) said the officers are being investigated for alleged abuse against a woman.

In a statement, Cozumel Police said the decision was made as a preventive measure while the corresponding investigations into the actions of the agents involved are being carried out.

According to the Cozumel SSC, the Internal Control Body began compiling information to start the investigation. The review will look into the conduct of the two officers during the arrest which was made on March 3.

The Body will review the protocols of the detention and transfer related to the Tuesday arrest of one of the two women.

In their statement, the Cozumel SSC stated that the objective is to clarify the facts and determine whether the officers acted in accordance with established procedures.

The incident happened Tuesday when one woman was accused of assault during an island home eviction. According to Fernando González Felipe, Chief of the Cozumel Municipal Police, a court clerk who led the eviction of a house on 130th Avenue and José María Morelos Street on Tuesday in Cozumel was assaulted during the operation.

He stated that the officers present were asked to arrest her.

“We are conducting the corresponding investigations with the disciplinary bodies within the Directorate to address these issues in case there was any police abuse,” he said.

He made the comment after video was released on social media showing the older woman, Daifa “N”, being handcuffed and lead to a police patrol unit with only one shoe. Both the mother and daughter were arrested during the eviction.

The eviction allegedly stemmed from a court order, authorizing the breaking of locks of the home due to a 70,000 peso loan between the detained woman’s daughter and a private individual.
