Riviera Maya, Q.R. — An approaching U.S. cold front will see the continuation of thunderstorms for Cancun and Riviera Maya. Mexico’s Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) said the front is expected to enter the Peninsula Thursday.
A low pressure channel over the Peninsula has been responsible for the recent thunderstorms, however, approaching cold air from the north (cold front 4) is expected to interact with moisture from the Caribbean Sea, generating additional thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.
Cold front number 4 is forecast to enter north and northeastern Mexico starting Thursday. The front, in interaction with a low pressure channel over the western Gulf of Mexico and the southern Yucatan Peninsula, together with the entry of moisture from the Caribbean Sea, will cause very heavy rains along the Yucatan Peninsula, including Quintana Roo, they reported.
On Friday and Saturday, the front will acquire stationary characteristics over the southeast including the Yucatan Peninsula. During these days, the front will cause heavy rains with intense thunderstorms in these regions.
The SMN says as much as 150 mms of rain could fall around Quintana Roo as the mass of cold air passes. The passing of the front will also result in strong winds and a slight drop in nighttime temperatures.
“In addition, the cold air mass that drives this front will cause northerly winds with gusts of 50 to 70 kilometers per hour on the coasts of Quintana Roo. A drop in temperatures is expected,” the SMN added.
