Riviera Maya, Q.R. — An approaching cold front is forecast to hit the Yucatan Peninsula by Monday. The mass of cold air is expected to enter Mexico territory late Sunday, reducing temperatures.

Cold front 33 could be the last blast of winter to hit the Yucatan Peninsula, ending the Mexican Caribbean seasonal cold weather.
Mexico’s Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) says cold front 33 is forecast to approach the Yucatan Peninsula starting Sunday evening March 9 and land in the region for Monday, March 10.
The mass of cold U.S. air will cause cloudiness and 5 to 25 mms of rain and possible thunderstorms around the state. “Due to its characteristics, higher rainfall accumulations may be recorded in some areas,” the SMN warned.
Wind will be from the north and northwest with gusts of 50 to 70 kms/h from Monday morning on the coasts of the state in the municipalities of Lázaro Cárdenas, Isla Mujeres, Benito Juárez and Cozumel are expected. The system’s winds will lose intensity during Tuesday, they said.
“A drop in temperatures is expected with minimum temperatures of between 15ºC and 17º C during the early morning of Tuesday, March 11 and Wednesday, March 12, with lower thermal sensations being perceived in rural areas of the state,” they reported.
The strong winds are likely to produce waves of between 2 and 4 meters. The SMN recommends boaters get information from Port Captaincies about the permitted sea activities during that time, follow the instructions and heed the restrictions issued by the Authority.

State Civil Protections is also warning residents about the strong winds forecast to arrived with the mass of cold U.S. air.
“Maintain precautions for maritime navigation and water activities along the coasts of the state of Quintana Roo and the Yucatan Channel and follow the instructions of lifeguards in beach areas,” Coordinación Estatal de Protección Civil Quintana Roo said in a statement.
