Approaching cold front causing rain as polar air nears peninsula

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Approaching cold front 27 that is heading for the Yucatán Peninsula is already causing periods of rain. The polar air, that began to enter peninsula territory late Sunday, is expected to stick around at least 24 hours.

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) says the mass of polar air approaching the peninsula will result in rain for much of Quintana Roo. Periods of showers with isolated heavy rainfall of between 25 to 50 mm is forecast for the state today.

“Today, cold front no. 27 will extend with stationary characteristics over the Yucatán Peninsula and southeastern Mexico, causing isolated intense rainfall in Veracruz (Los Tuxtlas and Olmeca), western Tabasco and northwestern Chiapas and isolated heavy rainfall in Yucatán,” the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) reported early Monday.

“The polar air mass associated with the front will maintain cold to very cold conditions during the morning and night over central, eastern and southeastern Mexico, as well as a strong to intense “Norte” wind event along the Gulf of Mexico coast, the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, and the Gulf of Tehuantepec, a condition that will diminish during the night.

“The influx of humid air from the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico and Pacific Ocean will bring very heavy, isolated showers to Veracruz (Papaloapan region) and Oaxaca; heavy, isolated showers to Quintana Roo, Campeche, and Puebla (Tehuacán-Sierra Negra region).

“Isolated showers are also expected in western and central Mexico,” they reported.

Last week, southerly winds left numerous Quintana Roo beaches covered in sargassum. More than 20 tons was lifted from the sandy areas of public beaches Thursday and Friday.

This latest incoming cold front will be arriving with strong north winds that could help counter that by diverting the floating sargassum toward a diffent sea current.

Recent southerly winds forced floating sargassum onto Quintana Roo beaches.
