Tulum, Q.R. — The main entrance to the archaeological zone of Tulum became the scene of a demonstration Thursday. Local artisans blocked one of the entrances to the Jaguar Park for more than an hour in protest of the sudden change of entrance for tourists.
The protesters argue that this measure will directly affect the influx of visitors to the commercial areas where they have sold their products for decades saying the change will leave them inoperative.
Pedro Canul, a representative of the artisans, highlighted the lack of dialogue on the part of authorities saying the closure of the main access puts the livelihood of more than a thousand families at risk.
According to Canul, if there are no immediate solution, the artisans could resort to more blockades as a pressure measure.
Artists blocked the entrance in protest of a move to change where tourists enter the park. Managing company GAFSACO will redirect tourists through the entrance they designed for the park, isolating the area where the artisans have been selling for years.
The group blocked access to the Jaguar Park Thursday. They lifted blockade after the Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo appeared to talk with the protesters, confirming a meeting with them and state authorities to find a solution.
