American cruise ship passenger rushed to Cancun hospital in medical evacuation

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — A tourist was rushed to a Cancun hospital yesterday from an American cruise ship. Marina personnel met the ship off the island of Isla Mujeres Tuesday for the medical evacuation.

The passenger, an American man, was reported suffering from acute pulmonary edema, atrial fibrillation, and thrombocytopenia. He was transported by sea to the mainland where a waiting ambulance rushed him to Cancun.

The Mexican Navy, in coordination with the Naval Search, Rescue, and Maritime Surveillance Station, reported that Tuesday, naval personnel conducted a medical evacuation of a foreign tourist off the coast of Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo.

“This action was carried out after receiving an emergency call from a cruise ship requesting the medical evacuation of a male tourist, a U.S. citizen, who was suffering from acute pulmonary edema, atrial fibrillation, and thrombocytopenia (low platelet count),” the statement read.

ENSAR Mujeres was ordered to immediately dispatch a vessel with Naval Medical personnel on board.

Once they arrived at the location, they performed a medical evaluation and evacuation of the individual, who was then transferred aboard a Defender-class rescue vessel to Puerto Juárez, Quintana Roo.

The man was transferred from the ship to the mainland Tuesday. April 7, 2026.

There, a private ambulance met them and transported them to a hospital in Cancún, Quintana Roo, for specialized medical care.
