Aggression gets man arrested after being reported for having dog on Playa del Carmen beach

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Municipal police arrested a man from a public beach of Playa del Carmen after being reported for having his dog. The unidentified man was asked to leave the beach by an on-duty lifeguard after arriving with his dog then swimming with it.

The lifeguard called police when the man became aggressive and refused to leave or remove his dog from the public area.

The incident happened over the weekend at Playa 38 in central Playa del Carmen. Police eventually arrived and tried to persued the man to leave the public beach with his dog, however, according to authorities, he became aggressive which resulted in his arrest.

Raúl Tasinari, the Secretary of Citizen Security, (SSC) explained that “the presence of the police occurred after the lifeguard assigned to that beach called 9-1-1 since he had repeatedly stated (to the beachgoer) that Playa 38 was not an area for having pets, since there is Playa 72, which is designated for the recreation of pets.

“This led to an argument and an aggressive attitude from the man, so the lifeguard requested support. When the police unit arrived, they tried to talk to him and convince him to leave with his pet, but the individual continued to be very aggressive, so they had to arrest him for threatening behavior.”

Tasinari said that “the canine was secured and transferred to the public security facilities where it was protected and given water until a relative of the owner arrived so that it could be taken home,” he said.

“It is necessary to remind citizens that on all beaches there are regulations regarding what is allowed and what is prohibited, in this case the entry of pets is prohibited since there is a beach authorized for animals.”

According to Tasinari, it was not the first time the lifeguard encountered that man. He acknowledge that the beachgoer who took his dog to the beach swimming was a repeat offender.

Tasinari said the man was released the same day after paying a fine. “We hope that it will serve as a lesson to him and that if he wants to share with his dog, he should go to Playa 72 and not have problems again,” he said.

In July, Solidaridad Municipal trustee Adrián Pérez Vega said Playa 72 in the Colosio neighborhood would be inaugurated as the city’s official dog beach.
