Tulum, Q.R. — An additional four million pesos has been allocated to hiring personnel in Tulum. The announcement was made Monday when Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo welcomed an additional 50 helping hands in the collection of sargassum. Fifty members of the Marina have arrived to help in the sargassum cleanup at Punta Piedra.

“We welcomed 50 members of the Marina who are joining the sargassum cleanup at Punta Piedra. This year, a more intense than normal inundation is the challenge to overcome, and that’s why we are joining forces across the municipality, state and federal government.
“We haven’t stopped working for a single day through Zofemat Tulum to keep our beaches clean. Taking care of our beaches is taking care of Tulum,” he said.
The additional hands were announced along with the hiring of approximately 100 people over the next two months. Castañón Trejo announced that more than four million pesos will be allocated to hire around 100 people for collection between August and October.
He explained that the resources have already been set aside to begin hiring immediately for the next positions to begin at the start of August.
“There are many tons extracted daily and we are going to have temporary employment, we are going to have about 100 spaces,” he said.

Diego Castañón Trejo said that while sargassum does affect the beaches, that does not mean that the tourist attractions are lost since there are archaeological sites, cenotes, caves and many other attractions for tourists take advantage of.
