12 year old accidently killed on Cancun beach in jet ski drug shooting

Cancun, Q.R. –Cancun authorities have begun an investigation into the deadly shooting of a 12 year old boy. The boy was shot in the chest while on a Cancun beach Sunday afternoon with his family.

The shooting happened around 3:00 p.m. when men on a jet ski arrived at the beach and opened fire at a group of other people. The young boy was hit by a stray bullet and rushed to a Cancun hospital where he later died.

According to the State Attorney General, (FGE) the boy and his family are Mexican residents of Cancun.

In a news statement, the Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE) said “initial investigations indicate that the attackers arrived by sea on a jet ski, shooting at some people presumably in a dispute over drug sales.

“However, they injured the minor who was with his family, but was not their target. The authorities arrived immediately and took the minor to the hospital where he unfortunately died.

“The members of the affected family are of Mexican nationality and reside in this municipality. The State Attorney General’s Office, in collaboration with members of the Coordination for the Construction of Peace and Security in Quintana Roo, is working to bring those responsible for this crime to justice.”

On Monday afternoon, Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama said they are looking into new surveillance technology. In an interview regarding the death of the boy she said “it is a tragedy without a doubt. We had a safety roundtable yesterday. I return to the subject of prevention.

“We are working on new technologies with the Hotel Council so that there is also investment in the beaches, not towards the interior of the hotels but towards the beaches,” she said. Lezama said that it is difficult to “establish order,” however, her administration is working to restore order, maintaining that the population must enjoy public places in complete safety.
