Othón P. Blanco, Q.R. — The mayor of the municipality of Othón P. Blanco says 10 million pesos is being invested to install roadway streetlights. From the city of Chetumal Monday, Mayor Yensunni Martínez announced the installation of 4.8 kilometers of public lighting.
The new streetlights will be installed on the road that connects Calderitas with the Oxtankah Archaeological Zone. The 10 million pesos, she says, will come from municipal resources.
“It is a project being started from scratch. We have to lay the wiring, install 167 galvanized poles and the lights.” She said 100 high-powered lights will be installed with a useful life of 10 years.
She said the work will be done over a period of two months and is part of the commitment in the areas of security and tourism.
“This area is visited by athletes who pass through very early, before dawn, and lighting is required. It will undoubtedly be a benefit for everyone. There are beach resorts and party halls near the Bay. It is a matter of security,” she stressed.
Martínez said that City Council has started a pilot program to suspend vehicular traffic at various points and times on Bahia de Chetumal Boulevard in order to guarantee the safety of pedestrians who carry out activities before dawn.
“We have had some unpleasant events. Some crashes that affected third parties, athletes, and even public service workers who are starting activities at that time. It is not a matter of bothering anyone, it is about safety and respecting each other, carrying out our activities in harmony, living together with respect in our environment,” she said.
“Right now, we do not want to announce this pilot program to suspend vehicle traffic on sections of the Chetumal Bay Boulevard.” Martínez says the vehicle suspension program is “in progress” and is still being analyzed to determine the most effective sections and times.
