Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Solidaridad Zofemat says work is being started on a project that will see the installation of breakwaters at El Recodo beach in central Playa del Carmen. Since the beginning of the year, the beach has been hit hard by the arrival of sargassum which, during its removal, has lead to erosion.
Lourdes Várguez Ocampo, Director of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat), announced that they are working on the project that, in due course, will be presented to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat).
Zofemat Solidaridad began the environmental impact statement required which, if approved, will allow the city to construct a breakwater system to protect the popular beach area.
“We are well into the project,” Ocampo says. “It is being put together. El Recodo is one of the most eroded areas,” she said months after the beach was rescued due to an overwhelming arrival of sargassum in August.
If approved, the municipality of Solidaridad would install breakwaters from around 10th Street to 16th Street. In August, the city’s centrally located beach had to be closed after tons of sargassum arrived in a short amount of time. The beach was cleaned and eventually reopened.
