Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — First thing in the morning, Zofemat crews are found knee deep in sargassum at El Recodo. A crew of workers have been designated to manually clean the public beach area that was hit hard by the latest arrival of seaweed.
According to Playa del Carmen mayor Lili Campos, Playa El Recodo was the city’s the most affected beach. It’s natural concave shape has hoarded masses of sargassum that have remained in the water and washed up on shore.
The landfall of seaweed has been so great that Campos declared the public beach as being temporarily closed to beachgoers. With a 48-hour break in seaweed arrival, Zofemat work crews have been able to make headway in clearing the algae. However, sargassum forecasts anticipate another arrival in coming days.
