Weapons, drugs and cell phones some of the items seized during Cancun prison search operation

Cancun, Q.R. — Drugs, cell phones and weapons were some of the illegally obtained items recovered from Cancun inmates Wednesday. The illegal items were recovered after police carried out a surprise inspection inside the Cancun prison.

The Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) said in a briefing that narcotics, cash, sharp weapons, USB devices, scales and cell phones with charges were some of the items confiscated during the operation.

According to their press release, the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana (SSC) of Quintana Roo reported that the operation was carried out in coordination with the National Guard, the Secretariat of the Navy, the Secretariat of National Defense, the State Attorney General’s Office and Preventive and Municipal Police.

The Wednesday inspection operation at the Benito Juárez Penitentiary Center in Cancun was focused on detecting and removing objects not permitted in the facilities, following the corresponding security protocols.

During the search, authorities seized 32 cell phones, 37 chargers, three headphones, 46 USB drives, 12 sharp weapons, 19 USB cables, nine scales, a laptop charger, nine USB adapters and six modems. In addition, 19,615 pesos in cash and 31 dollars in other denominations were seized.

Prohibited substances were also detected and seized including 469 grams of marijuana, 105 grams of cocaine, 180 bagged doses of crystal meth, 30 grams of crystal meth and three doses of marijuana, as well as a brown pill.

The operation was in response to the authorities’ commitment to maintain security inside and around the prison, the SSC said.
