Authorities storm Cancun prison in search of illegal contraband

Cancun, Q.R. — State and municipal police, in the company of military personnel, searched the Cancun prison Wednesday. Authorities began their search of the Benito Juárez Social Reintegration Center early in the morning for illegal items.

The search was in response to a recent inmate escape that local authorities hinted at being intentional. Two top prison personnel were fired the following day. The inmate, a 27 year old male, remains at large. Days before his escape, he was captured for the rape and murder of a two year old boy and attempted murder of the boy’s six year old brother.

On Tuesday night, authorities stormed the prison in search of illegal contraband, mostly among inmates. There have also been reports that the operation was made after possible links between the Cancun prison system and members of the Cancun taxi union.

The Cancun taxi union was searched Monday night after the recent murders of two drivers and one member. Police have made three arrests in those murders, one of whom was of the taxi union leader.
