Vehicle Rental Association anticipates expansion of tourist courtesy card before Easter

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The tourist vehicle rental courtesy card could be expanded to include Playa del Carmen and Tulum. The Vehicle Rental Association of Quintana Roo is anticipating the expansion approval before the Easter holidays.

The card was introduced in December of 2023 and handed out by car rental companies in Cancun. The Asociación de Arrendadoras de Vehículos del Estado de Quintana Roo says they are hoping the tourist card program soon includes other busy destinations such as Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

The tourist “courtesy card” is given to tourists who rent vehicles. The card is placed on the dashboard and provides the driver with exemptions of minor driving infractions if stopped by police.

Alma Reynoso Zambrano, President of the Asociación de Arrendadoras de Vehículos del Estado de Quintana Roo, says the proposal to expand the program is currently being analyzed by the municipal councils.

“The idea is for it to be approved by the City Council before Easter for municipalities like Tulum and Playa del Carmen,” she commented.

“The card applies if they are stopped for a minor infraction, but not for cases like collisions, parking in spaces for disabled people or drunk driving. This courtesy pass will apply to all other offenses consisting of two passes as in Cancun,” explained Reynoso Zambrano.

Reynoso Zambrano says the state government is working to make the cards available online so they can be managed digitally through an app designed to provide comprehensive assistance to tourists in Quintana Roo.

Visitors will be able to download the card directly from the app after entering their personal rental contract and vehicle information. The tourist courtesy card gives drivers three passes for minor driving infractions while visiting the state of Quintana Roo.
