Cancun, Q.R. — Winter storms across the U.S. wreaked havoc with international flights Friday and Saturday. More than a dozen flights at Cancun International were affected by the stormy U.S. weather that has left many southern areas under snow.
According to Aeropuertos del Sureste (ASUR), the company that manages the Cancun airport, five arrivals and eight departures had already been delayed by Friday afternoon.
The five delayed arrivals in Cancun were Delta flights originating in Atlanta. Departure delays were reported on five Delta Airlines flights to Atlanta and three American Airlines flights to Charlotte.
On Friday, another four flights involving American Airlines and Delta from Dallas and Atlanta into Cancun were cancelled.
As of Saturday morning, U.S. flights continued to be affected by the adverse weather. Several flights into the Cancun airport had already been delayed while at least one Atlanta flight scheduled to land early Saturday morning at Cancun International by Delta flight 1939 was canceled.
The airline chaos is due to a winter storm that has been hammering the U.S. south. Areas of Tennessee including Memphis and Nashville as well as Atlanta, were some of the areas hit by snow and sleet Friday.
According to FlightAware, more than 3,000 flights in and out of the U.S. were affected Friday alone. The winter storm also left homes and businesses in Georgia, Texas and Arkansas without power.
