Two Cancun officers arrested on allegations of rape during home search

Cancun, Q.R. — Two Cancun police officers have been arrested on rape charges. The pair were taken into legal custody Wednesday in two separate arrests. One officer was detained in Cancun, while the second was picked up in Puerto Morelos.

In an official statement, the State Attorney General (FGE) says that José de Jesús “N” and Esteban “N” were arrested for the September 13, 2023 rape of an unidentified woman.

Both men are being held “for their alleged participation in events that could constitute the crime of rape to the detriment of a victim whose identity is withheld. The State Attorney General’s Office completed an arrest warrant against José de Jesús “N” and Esteban “ N”, both who worked as agents of the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Traffic of the municipality of Benito Juárez,” the Agency reported.

“According to the victim, the events occurred on September 13, 2023. She went to present the formal complaint so that the corresponding investigations could be carried out, which led to the arrest of the alleged perpetrators,” they added.

Their arrests stem from a home search in SM 76 when, during that September 2023 search, the woman was allegedly raped.

According to the FGE, one of the arrests took place on Andrés Quinta Roo Avenue in Cancun and the second in the town of Leona Vicario in the municipality of Puerto Morelos.

Their arrests came less than two weeks after the sudden departure of their former boss, José Pablo Mathey Cruz.

On February 1, José Pablo Mathey Cruz, who held the position of Municipal Secretary of Citizen Security and Transit of Cancun for a year-and-a-half, resigned. He was replaced two days later by the current head of Security, Captain Carlos Ernesto D’amiano Sumoano.

After the swearing in of D’amiano Sumoano, Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta reported in a statement “building peace in our city is my priority. Captain, we are giving you one of the maximum responsibilities, which is the safety of our residents and visitors.”
