Cancun swears in new head of security

Cancun, Q.R. — The municipality of Benito Juarez has assigned a new head of security. On Friday, Captain Carlos Ernesto D’amiano Sumoano was officially appointed as the new Municipal Secretary of Citizen Security and Transit of Cancun.

“With the unanimous approval of the members of the Cabildo, the government of Benito Juarez appointed Captain Carlos Ernesto D’amiano Sumoano as Municipal Secretary of Citizen Security and Transit under the objective to strengthen actions and coordinated work in building peace, crime prevention and addressing the origins of violence,” the City of Cancun publilshed in an official statement.

Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta entrusted the new head to work with the firm purpose of ensuring the well-being and safety of Cancun families and continuing with the coordinated work actions and thanked former head, José Pablo Mathey Cruz, for the work done.

“Building peace in our city is my priority. Captain, we are giving you one of the maximum responsibilities, which is the safety of our residents and visitors. I trust that you will be able to live up to this task, that with your career, capacity and vision we will continue to strengthen the security of our municipality,” she said in a statement.

Mathey Cruz, who took office in October 2023, said his leaving was not was a dismissal and attributed his change to the demands of his military career. He stated that his departure is on good terms.

Captain Carlos Ernesto D’amiano Sumoano, who is an engineer in Naval Sciences, has been distinguished with the Sixth, Fifth, Fourth, Third and Second Class perseverance decorations for 30 years of active service in the Mexican Navy and has an Honorable Mention for Outstanding Performance in Securing Narcotics.
