Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Isla Mujeres firemen were called to the scene of a golf cart fire that left the unit destroyed. The incident happened on the island around noon on the Rueda Medina extension Tuesday.

The rented cart was traveling the island road near the whale shark monument when it burst into flames. The occupants jumped off the cart as fire began to erupt more than a meter into the air.
Several lookie loos stopped to watch as the golf cart burned. Island firemen were called to the location where they extinguished the burning cart. Within minutes the entire golf cart was reduced to a metal shell and eventually towed away.
Isla Mujeres Civil Protection have since reported the fire was due to an electrical short circuit. In an official statement they said “members of the Isla Mujeres Civil Protection Coordination and Fire Department responded to a golf cart fire that broke out Tuesday afternoon on the Rueda Medina extension.
“According to the official report, the incident was caused by a short circuit in the vehicle’s electrical system, which caused the flames to spread rapidly.

“However, the flames were quickly extinguished by civil protection personnel and the fire was brought under control with no injuries reported.

“The Municipal Government reiterates its call to golf cart owners to conduct preventive inspections of their vehicles to prevent incidents that jeopardize the safety of residents and visitors to the municipality,” said Coordinacion Municipal De Proteccion Civil Y Bomberos De Isla Mujeres.
