Cancun police capture suspects in second attempted jewelry store heist

Cancun, Q.R. — For the second time in a week, police were at a Cancun jewelry store in response to an armed robbery. Officers were at the Plaza Las Américas mall again Tuesday evening after an armed robbery at Bizarro jewelry.

According to preliminary reports, the robbery occurred around 8:30 p.m. when a group of armed men broke into the jewelry store and fired shots. The sound of gunfire created a human stampede of people running to get out of harm’s way.

A hammer was reportedly used to try and break open the glass showcases, however, the armoring of the display cases prevented the breakage and the thieves left empty handed.

Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) officers launched a search for those responsible and announced the “arrests of individuals”.

In a statement, the SSC (Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana) said “The Citizen Security Secretariat of the State of Quintana Roo reports that, following the events that occurred at a jewelry store located inside Plaza Las Américas in the city of Cancun, a coordinated operation was immediately implemented with agencies from all three levels of government, with the purpose of protecting citizens and restoring order in the area.

“As a result of this action, individuals allegedly linked to the attempted robbery were arrested. They will be handed over to the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Quintana Roo in order to determine their possible involvement in the events and initiate the corresponding investigations in accordance with the law.

“The Secretariat maintains an active presence at the site and at strategic points in the city through preventive patrols, on-foot patrols and vehicle inspection checkpoints, reinforcing surveillance efforts in shopping centers and high-traffic areas.

“Likewise, the agency reiterates its commitment to continue working in coordination with the State Attorney General’s Office, the National Guard, the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of the Navy, and municipal authorities to clarify the events and strengthen security measures for the benefit of Quintana Roo families.”

Cancun police capture suspects in attempted jewelry store heist

A week ago, Cancun police were at Momentos Bizzarro jewelry store inside Plaza Las Américas after employees reported that several men had burst into the store and attempted to rob it. Those responsible made a successful escape. Police have not said if those captured Tuesday night are the same as those responsible for the attempted heist last week.
