Cancun, Q.R. — Police in Cancun were successful in stopping a jewelry store robbery inside a mall. Officers were at the scene of the attempted robbery Tuesday evening in response to 9-1-1 reports of gunfire inside the mall.
Cancun police arrived at Momentos Bizzarro jewelry store inside Plaza Las Américas where they confirmed that no shots had been fired. Store employees reported that several men had burst into the store and attempted to rob it.
Store security cameras captured two of the men dressed in black wearing motorcycle helmets as they used a hammer to break open glass display cases, however, they fled before stealing anything.
Cancun police said they are using the camera footage to track down those responsible. In a statement, the the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Traffic (SMSCyT) reported on the attempted heist.
“The Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Traffic (SMSCyT) of Benito Juárez reports that following a report to the 911 emergency number regarding alleged gunshots inside Plaza Las Américas, officers from this agency immediately responded to the scene.
“After an on-site review, it was confirmed that it was an attempted robbery of a jewelry store, which was unsuccessful. Furthermore, the existence of gunshots was ruled out, and no injuries were reported.
“The SMSCyT, in coordination with the State Attorney General’s Office, is closely monitoring the alleged perpetrators through monitoring C5 and C2 cameras in order to identify and locate them.”
