Torrential rains ahead of U.S. arctic air arrival causes delays at Cancun International

Cancun, Q.R. — More than a dozen flights were affected Wednesday by Cancun’s torrential rains. The rains, which created low visibility, forced early scheduled flights to land at other airports.

A total of 16 flights were diverted from landing at Cancun International Wednesday morning due to the extremely wet weather. Aeropuertos del Sureste (Asur), the airport’s managing company, confirmed as of Wednesday afternoon, 16 flights were delayed, but not cancelled.

Eleven of the 16 flights were sent to Merida Airport. Those included one flight from Volaris, two by Viva Aerobus, two by Frontier, one Air Transat, two Aeromexico, a Southwest, Jetblue and Spirit flight.

Asur reported one Volaris flight was diverted to Cozumel International, while a Copa Airlines flight had to land at Tulum International. Three flights were left in a holding pattern (one Viva Aerobus, one Avelo Airlines and one Jetblue), while weather conditions improved.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Asur said Cancun International received 450 operations (227 arrivals and 223 departures) without any cancellations. The heavy rains were forecast to hit the region ahead of a mass of arctic air arriving from the U.S. this week.
