Three arrested during at-sea operation to detect illegal fishing

Mérida, Yucatán — A joint at-sea operation against illegal fishing results in three detainees along the Yucatan coast. As part of maritime surveillance efforts, the SSP, in coordination with federal authorities, seized a vessel carrying prohibited products and arrested three people.

Three men were arrested by members of the Ministry of Public Security (SSP) during a joint operation with the National Aquaculture and Fisheries Commission (Conapesca) and the Ministry of the Navy (Semar) Wednesday after authorities located illegally captured seafood subject to a fishing ban.

Authorities located the vessel during a surveillance patrol along the Yucatan coast as part of the actions directed by Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena to combat illegal fishing along the state’s coastline.

The captured seafood was found on board their vessel during the Wednesday inspection. The detainees were identified as ELC, 33, from Yucatán and MHL, 33 and AGL, 46, both from Campeche.

A 26-foot boat with no visible registration equipped with a Yamaha outboard motor, was also seized. The corresponding proceedings were forwarded to the competent authority for further follow-up of the case.

“The State Government urges everyone to respect the closed season and report any suspicious activity related to illegal fishing through official channels. It also recognizes the coordinated work, professionalism, and commitment of the SSP, Semar and Conapesca personnel in protecting marine resources,” the Government of Yucatan said in a statement.
