Thick fog at Tijuana International causes over two dozen delays into Cancun

Cancun, Q.R. — Adverse weather conditions in Tijuana Wednesday caused flight delays at Cancun International. Domestic flights heading for the Caribbean side of Mexico were delayed due to thick fog in the Baja California city.

More than two dozen flights coming in and out of Cancun were affected as a result of operational disruptions at the Tijuana International Airport, one of the country’s main hubs.

On Thursday, Cancun airport managing company Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) said the delays included flights also connecting to other cities in Mexico. Some of the affected destinations included Tijuana, Guadalajara, Querétaro, Santa Lucía, Oaxaca, Toluca, Puebla, San Luis Potosí and Monterrey.

Airport authorities and airlines noted that the disruptions were not limited to only direct flights, but also affected itineraries with layovers since Cancun International maintains a direct connection with Tijuana, a terminal that serves as a connection point for numerous domestic routes.

The airline havoc was due to reduced visibility at the Tijuana airport from thick fog Wednesday which forced operational adjustments to ensure air safety.

By the end of the day, airports reported four cancellations and 30 flight delays. The cancelled flights affected travelers from San Luis Potosí and San José, Costa Rica.
