Suspect wanted in 2004 murder of Arizona woman extradited from Mexico

Mexico City, Mexico — The suspect in the 2004 sexual assault and murder of an Arizona woman has been extradited from Mexico. On Thursday, the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) extradited Sergio “R” to the U.S. to face charges.

Sergio “R” was considered a fugitive by the United States government. “He was wanted by the Superior Court of the State of Arizona in Maricopa County for the crimes of homicide and sexual assault,” the FGR (Fiscalía General de la República) reported.

“In July 2004, Sergio “R” sexually assaulted a woman and subsequently strangled her to death.

“Following the efforts of the FGR, the Government of Mexico granted the extradition of the defendant to the Government of the United States after achieving his arrest in March 2023 in Rosarito, Baja California,” they reported in a statement.

The suspect was handed over at the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) to U.S. federal agents for his transfer.
