State Civil Protection warns residents of winds and heavy rains with incoming cold front

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Heavy rain and continued strong winds are in the forecast for the Yucatan Peninsula with the arrival of a cold front. Another blast of cold U.S. air is forecast to make its way to the Quintana Roo coast.

Although the mass of cold air is already on its way, it is not expected to reach the Cancun, Riviera Maya region unil late Monday. State Civil Protection has issued a weather advisory on Cold Front 37 due to the amount of rainfall expected.

The approach and movement of cold front number 37 and the prefrontal trough (low-pressure channel) toward the Yucatan Peninsula will begin on the afternoon of Monday, April 7, and continuing through Tuesday, April 8, the state agency reported Sunday.

This will result in the following conditions in the state of Quintana Roo: Increasing cloudiness, very heavy rains with intense rainfall (75 to 150 mms) accompanied by electrical activity and gusty winds in storm-prone areas.

Due to their characteristics, higher rainfall accumulations may be recorded in some areas. Winds will be from the northwest, north, and northeast with gusts of 40 to 60 kms/h starting Tuesday morning mainly along the northern coasts of the state in the municipalities of Lázaro Cárdenas, Isla Mujeres, Benito Juárez and Cozumel.

The winds will weaken during the night of Wednesday, April 9. Waves of 2 to 3 meters high are expected. Temperatures are expected to drop with lows of between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius (60 and 62 degrees Fahrenheit) during the early morning hours of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, mainly in rural areas of the state, with lower wind chills possible.

Local boaters are being reminded to check with the Port Authority about permitted at-sea activities and heed any restrictions issued by the Authority. State Civil Protection says residents need to maintain precautions for maritime navigation and water activities along the coasts of the State of Quintana Roo and the Yucatan Channel. Swimmers need to heed the instructions of lifeguards in beach areas.
