Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The welcome to Solidaridad overpass along the federal highway into Playa del Carmen has been revamped. The entire pedestrian overpass has been painted sand color and the lettering changed to match the new municipal name.

“For decades, every change of administration brought with it a change of colors in the city,” said Mayor Estefanía Mercado. “Past governments painted parks, sidewalks and public buildings in their party colors, imposing their image on the urban landscape. That logic no longer holds true in the new Playa del Carmen.
Today, under the leadership of Mayor Estefanía Mercado, Playa del Carmen is painted in one color: sandy beach, a symbol of unity, identity and love for this land.
“The city is not a political prize. It’s our common home, and it should reflect who we are as a community,” the Mayor stated. “That’s why we’re leaving party colors behind and adopting the color that represents us all: sand.”
More than 67 public parks have already been restored with this new color palette. The goal is to transform more than 300 spaces during the current administration. One of the current projects is the pedestrian entrance to the city which will also adopt this hue that evokes our beaches, our history and our identity.
“The color of the beach sand doesn’t represent a government or a political party. It represents Playa del Carmen. It represents the commitment to a more dignified, more humane and more truly our municipality,” she explained.

With this transformation, Estefanía Mercado’s government reaffirms that Playa del Carmen is no longer governed by party interests, but rather by its people.
