Puerta al Mar access road nearing half complete

Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — Governor Mara Lezama says the progress of the first direct beach access road for Felipe Carrillo Puerto is nearing half complete. Governor Lezama, along with personnel from the National Defense Secretariat (SEDENA) and municipal authorities, supervised the progress of the construction of the Puerta al Mar access road Monday.

“Thanks to the immense affection of our President Andrés Manuel López Obrador for our Mayan lands, today we are supervising the work that SEDENA is doing, the long-awaited Puerta al Mar.

“The objective, to connect the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto with the Mexican Caribbean. This is the response to an old demand of residents, a very heartfelt but also very fair demand,” said the Governor.

During the Monday visit, Governor Lezama reported 47 percent paving progress. She reported that 22 kilometers will be paved and the remaining 32.3 kilometers will remain unpaved or natural to respect the protected area of Sian Ka’an.

Lezama reported that the project also includes a monument, roundabout and bike path along the entire route.

“It will have a roundabout with a monument in memory of political prisoners and a dock for healthy recreation. What was a prison at the beginning of the last century will become an extraordinary area where everyone will be able to learn about the shocking history of the struggle of our indigenous people,” she said.

Lezama said the completed project will connect the Mayan zone with the sea, claiming their right to a natural asset and a better quality of life.

“These projects mark a turning point in a different way of governing thanks to the New Agreement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo, with a humanistic and transformative government that works on the economic and sustainable development of the Mayan region,” said the Governor.
