Police neutralized attacker who met them with gunfire during domestic violence call

Cancun, Q.R. — Police in Cancun fired back when they were met with bullets at a domestic violence call Wednesday. A man identified as Jorge “L” was neutralized by a non-fatal bullet wound from police who repelled the attack.

Police were responding to a 9-1-1 call from woman inside a hotel property who reported being physically assaulted by her husband. The woman had her minor son with her at the time of the incident.

When police arrived, they were met by the man alleged reported for domestic violence. He began shooting at police as they entered the hotel property. Police fired back, wounding him. He was taken to hospital for medical attention.

The incident happened early Wednesday morning at El Pedregal hotel located along a section of highway southeast of Cancun. The woman and child were removed from the property by personnel from the Specialized Group for Attention to Domestic and Gender Violence (Geavig).

In a statement Wednesday afternoon, the FGE of Quintana Roo reported “starting an  investigation for attempted homicide against members of the Interinstitutional Group. The events occurred at a hotel in the municipality of Benito Juárez when officers repelled gunfire from a suspect while rescuing a minor, who was then taken by Grupo Especializado en Atención a la Violencia Familiar y de Género (Geavig) personnel for safekeeping.

“The Attorney General’s Office reaffirms its commitment to the children of Quintana Roo, ensuring a life free from violence.”

According to reports, police collected spent shell casings and four weapons from the property which included two high-caliber rifles, a pistol and a shotgun.
