Police find criminal security cameras installed around Felipe Carrillo Puerto

Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — Security cameras believed installed by a criminal group have been dismantled in Felipe Carrillo Puerto. Authorities made the discovery days earlier during an arrest when their suspects were found with the evidence.

On Monday, a coordinated operation between municipal and federal officials was implemented to remove the illegal infrastructure. Officials were seen around 5:00 p.m. Monday at different strategic points in Felipe Carrillo Puerto dismantling cameras.

Authorities removed an illegally installed camera from the outside of a business on Santiago Pacheco Cruz Avenue as well as another they found located at the entrance to the town. The cameras were allegely installed to monitor traffic leading to Chetumal and Tulum.

According to available information, the operation was carried out after the arrest of individuals believed to be members of a criminal cell. During their arrests, police seized various pieces of camera surveillance equipment found on the suspects at the time.

The criminals allegedly used the now-seized cameras to monitor operations by police and opposing criminal groups. Some of the cameras were found to have been compromised through hacking methods, allowing individuals or criminal groups to access the broadcasts in real time.

It is the second time in as many months that security cameras installed by criminal groups have been dismantled from public spaces in the south of the state.

In February, police located what ended up being more than 35 illegally installed security cameras in public spaces by criminal groups. The cameras were installed along roadways on poles and in trees around the municipality of Tulum.
