Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — City Council says they will start monitoring the Playacar area for deer after another animal was hit. Wednesday, authorities were called to a public street after a deer was struck by a car.
The deer was hit by a vehicle near a condominium complex by a driver who chose not to stop. Luis Herrera Quiam, the General Secretary of the PDC City Council, said that patrols will be conducted to locate deer and secure their relocation.
“The mayor has instructed that the necessary patrols be conducted to try to identify if there are more specimens and, in turn, to proceed with their relocation,” he said.
According to Herrera Quiam, the Federal Attorney’s Office for Environmental Protection (Profepa) is responsible for caring for wildlife, but as municipal authorities, they are responsible for preventing accidents.

The municipal official said that the injured animal from Tuesday is receiving veterinary care under the protection of the Federal Attorney’s Office for Environmental Protection (Profepa). He said that they cannot confirm how many deer are in the Playacar area, but they suspect there are at least three more.
Last week, the Directorate of Regulation and Environmental Impact Assessment closed a Playacar real estate development. The residential project was closed after wild deer were seen on the site next to heavy machinery. At the site, city officials learned the developer had exceeded the allowed clearing limit by 3,000 meters and also failed to abide by several other terms of their construction permit.
