Officials say ‘Mexico is in fashion’ announcing a 10 percent increase in international tourists

Mexico City, Mexico — President Claudia Sheinbaum says Mexico is in fashion. On Wednesday, she highlighted the historic record arrival of international visitors in January 2026.

“This year is going to be a very good year in every way, and particularly in tourism,” she said Wednesday. According to statistics, nearly 9 million international tourists arrived in the country during the month of January.

That figure is a 10 percent increase over the same period last year.

President Claudia Sheinbaum said Mexico is in fashion. As proof of this, in January 2026, a historic record was registered in the arrival of international visitors with 8.84 million, that is, 10 percent more than in 2025.

“As Josefina (Rodríguez Zamora, Secretary of Tourism) says, Mexico is in fashion. The whole world wants to know Mexico. Mexico plays a very important role internationally, not only diplomatically but also culturally and in every other way.

“So this year is going to be a very good year in every sense, and particularly in tourism,” she stated at her Wednesday morning press conference.

Tourism Secretary Josefina Rodríguez Zamora indicated that the economic impact also reached a record high of over $3.4 billion, 3.9 percent more than last year. She added that cruise ship arrivals at Mexican ports increased to 1.28 million people.

Furthermore, domestic flight passengers increased by 2.2 percent to 5.18 million and international flight passengers increased by 2.5 percent to 5.80 million.

In January 2026, the country’s museums registered 1,174,385 visitors, archaeological sites recorded 975,711 tourists and the Maya Train transported 13,166 foreign passengers.

In addition, domestic tourism grew by 6 percent with 8.7 million tourists staying in hotel rooms during the first month of 2026.

Mexico will host the World Sports Tourism Congress in September of 2026.

Rodríguez Zamora also announced that Mexico will host the fourth edition of the UN World Sports Tourism Congress (WSTC) from September 7 to 9. This will be the first time this international event is held outside of Europe.
