Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Five lawbreakers spent the day forking sargassum from a section of Playa del Carmen beach Friday. The group arrived early in the day to remove the sargassum as part of social repayment for their administrative offences.

The group were monitored by two SSC officers during the hours they spent performing their community service. The five men, who have been charged with minor administrative offences, were offered the opportunity to repay their debt to society by removing sargassum rather than paying a fine or serving 36 hours in jail.
The SSC says the men were part of a municipal social justice program that allows offenders to compensate for damages with community service.
“Community Service in Action. As part of the restorative justice program, the Secretariat of Civic Justice and Human Coexistence, in coordination with the Playa del Carmen Citizen Security Secretariat, directs offenders to clean up public spaces.

“This measure compensates for the damage, promotes social responsibility, and improves our municipality,” said the SSC Playa del Carmen.
