Nine minors selling oranges removed from Cancun street

Cancun, Q.R. — A total of nine children were picked up by state workers Monday after being found selling oranges in traffic. The children were reported to personnel from the Specialized Group for Attention to Domestic and Gender Violence (GEAVIG).

They were located on a public roadway in central Cancun carrying bags and pushing shopping carts of green oranges that were being offered to pedestrians and drivers. Officers from the Grupo Especializado de Atención a la Violencia Intrafamiliar y de Género (GEAVIG) questioned two adults who were not the parents of any of the children.

They also could not provide documentation that any of the nine children were enrolled in school. The children, along with their bags and shopping carts, were removed from the street.

In a brief statement, Policía de Cancún said “nine girls and boys who were selling oranges on the streets of Cancun were protected and guarded by the Specialized Group for Attention to Domestic and Gender Violence (GEAVIG).

The minors were removed from selling oranges on a public street in central Cancun Monday.

“The officers identified them and two adults, but the adults did not prove their relationship with the children or present any documents.”

Police did not comment on any arrests. Last week, two children were removed by the same group of police officers after reports they were selling candy on a central Cancun street.
