Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — More than 79,000 people have hit Playa del Carmen beaches in December, however, that figure is forecast to reach nearly 200,000 by the end of the month. Irving Rafael Lili Madrigal, the Director of the Federal Maritime Land Zone (Zofemat) of Solidaridad, said the 79,000 counted visitors corresponds to the first three weeks of the month.
According to Madrigal, the most visited city beaches have been Playa Caribe, Xcalacoco, Playa 88 and Punta Esmeralda. He says both national and international tourists have been recorded enjoying the city’s sun and sand.
Madrigal pointed out that beachgoers heading to Blue Flag beaches are being stopped from carrying Styrofoam coolers and glass bottles onto the sand to promote both visitor safety and environmental protection.
“In these cases, we offer beachgoers a cooler made of recycled material so they can use it during their stay, and at the end of their visit, they can retrieve their original Styrofoam cooler upon leaving,” he said.
However, during the last week of 2024, a substantial increase is expected. According to Samantha Álvarez Hernández, the Secretary of Sustainable Environment and Climate Change of Solidaridad, the number of visitors is expected to reach nearly 200,000 between the city’s 11 public beaches.
Álvarez Hernández said that to guarantee the safety of beachgoers, they are working in a coordinated manner with the Secretariat of Civil Protection and Tourist Police.
She says the beaches are in good condition for the enjoyment of both citizens and tourists, however, she is urging people to take care of the beaches by picking up their trash before they leave.
