Cárdenas, Tabasco — National Guard personnel rescued a howler monkey that was being offered for sale on the side of the road. Authorities were made aware of the animal sale after a motorist report.
In compliance with the National Public Security Strategy in Tabasco, personnel from the National Guard (GN) rescued a saraguato or howler monkey, which was offered for sale on the road,” National Guard reported.
“Derived from a citizen complaint about the presence of a person offering the specimen for sale near the Sánchez Magallanes toll booth, National Guard moved to the point located at kilometer 70+220 of the Agua Dulce-Cárdenas highway in the municipality of Cárdenas.
“Upon arriving, National Guard personnel noticed from a distance a person carrying the primate, which he intended to sell to road users. However, upon noticing the presence of official units, the individual threw the monkey to the ground and fled. It was not possible to catch up with him.”
However, the responding National Guard elements were able to approach the secure the monkey, who they reported “was showing weakness, so they offered it water while notifying the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (Profepa).”
Profepa personnel arrived for the proper handling and transfer of the monkey to the La Venta Zoo in Villahermosa, Tabasco. The monkey, along with Profepa personnel, were provided with a National Guard escorted tour to the zoo.
