Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A multimodal space is being planned for the Maya Train in Playa del Carmen. Edier Brotman, the General Director of the Institute for Development and Financing of the State of Quintana Roo says the space would allow for the cargo transportation of goods via train.
According to Brotman, the designated land is already available, however, they are still in the planning phase and require a multi-million dollar investment to begin. He says the federal government will be the body to prioritize cargo transportation in the state.
Two strategic stations are being constructed, one in Cancun and the other in Chetumal. Brotman says those stations have been chosen due to their proximity to the international airport and the Central American border, respectively.
However, he emphasized that it would be highly desirable to include Playa del Carmen in the rail logistics network since freight transport represents a more profitable operation compared to passenger transport.
“Passenger trains aren’t profitable on their own. The real business is in transporting cargo and having that option in Playa del Carmen would strengthen the project’s viability,” he said.

The project is still under analysis and will depend on local authorities coordinating the federal government and private investment. If successful, Playa del Carmen would be integrated into a logistics network that could boost trade and strengthen its strategic position in Riviera Maya.
In November, President Sheinbaum said studies had been started for the construction of cargo tracks to connect Tren Maya as a transport route. The connection would be made via an extension project constructed by the Ministry of National Defense and cost around 35 billion pesos.
