More than 3,200 turtle hatchlings seized during highway check stop

San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas — A highway check stop lead to the arrest of one person for illegally transporting wildlife. On Thursday night, José “N” was taken into custody after police found him in possession of more than 3,000 turtle hatchlings.

The turtles, of the Trachemys venusta species, were being transported in overcrowded conditions and subject to a lack of dignified and respectful treatment.

The finding was made at a checkpoint at kilometer 46 of the San Cristóbal-Chiapa de Corzo highway. Security officers located José “N” in flagrante delicto illegally transporting more than 3,000 turtles commonly known as American slider.

Authorities placed José “N” at the disposal of the Public Ministry and informed Profepa (Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Ambiente) to secure the specimens which were taken to a registered Environmental Management Unit where they are currently receiving medical attention and evaluation.

Profepa, (the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection), has initiated the corresponding administrative procedure and is assisting the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) to continue and strengthen the investigation. It will also monitor the seized specimens, prioritizing their return to the natural environment, if conditions permit.
