Mexico City, Mexico — The Government of Mexico has earmarked 50 billion pesos to deal with the country’s potholes this year. The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) says the money will be spent to repair holes on 18,000 kilometers of Mexican highways.
The 50 billion peso program is part of the National Program for Road Conservation and Pothole Repair 2026, “which contemplates an investment of 50 billion pesos to intervene on 18,000 kilometers of the Federal Toll-Free Highway Network,” the SICT said.
Head of the SICT (Secretaría de Infraestructura, Comunicaciones y Transportes), Jesús Esteva Medina, reported that the program will generate 100,000 jobs and allow the government to address one of the main citizen demands.

He says work has already begun and will cover the entire country through five regions: northwest, central-west, central, northeast and south-southeast.
“In the Pothole Repair Program, we have a monitoring and control system. All SICT Centers have already been trained. An application was developed, and we have a Monitoring and Control Center where the entire Federal Free Highway Network will be inspected once a week.
“We will be detecting and diagnosing potholes and addressing them. We will have a record of the repair within 72 hours.” he said. He also reported that 20 repaving trains have been acquired and another 11 are needed.
“Twenty repaving trains were acquired of which 10 began work last year. The other 10 are starting between January and February, these by the SICT, and 11 more will be acquired so that each state has one, so as we finish the work in one state we will be moving the trains.”
He explained that these are state-of-the-art machines that will allow them to move forward faster in the rehabilitation of the roads.

“We have pavers, pneumatic compactors, roller compactors, reclaimers that allow us to access the lower layers, profilers, milling machines and also pavement spreaders.”
Esteva Medinaadded that 108 vehicles and 247 workers will participate in the nation-wide Megabachetón program or pothole repair project.
The money will be divided in five regions that include 8.6 billion pesos to improve 3,170 km of roads in the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Durango, Sonora, and Sinaloa.
In the northeast, 7.1 billion pesos will be spent to improve 2,110 kilometers of road in Coahuila, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí and Zacatecas. For the central-western region: 7.3 billion pesos will be used to improve 2,444 kilometers of roads in Aguascalientes, Colima, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Michoacán, Nayarit and Querétaro.

Fo the central region 7.2 billion pesos will go to fixing 1,998 kilometers of roads in the states of Mexico, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Morelos, Puebla and Tlaxcala. In the south-southeast, the SICT will repair roads in Campeche, Chiapas, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Veracruz and Yucatán with an investment of 10.8 million pesos.
