Mexico’s Navy makes two ton cocaine bust off coast of Chiapas

Barra Tonalá, Chiapas — Mexico’s Navy made a two ton cocaine bust off the coast of Chiapas Wednesday night. On Thursday, authorities reported on the bust after sighting two suspicious motorized boats during the darkened hours.

On Thursday, the Mexican Navy, acting as Coast Guard, seized two boats with 55 packages weighing approximately two tons near Barra Tonalá, Chiapas. The bust was successful due to the development of an operation through intelligence information that allowed authorities to detect and track the two suspicious small vessels.

“Land and air deployment was carried out which resulted in the seizure of said vessels with narcotics,” the Secretaría de Marina a través de la Armada de México reported in a statement.

“The seized items were then loaded onto a Mexican Navy ship to be taken to land and made available to the competent ministerial authorities to be included in the corresponding investigation file.

“It should be noted that the potential economic impact resulting from this seizure amounts to approximately $25 million USD, thereby weakening the financial structure of criminal groups,” they said.

During the current administration of Claudia Sheinbaum, more than 26 tons of suspected cocaine, 34 vessels, a low-profile vessel (semi-submersible), almost 80 engines, approximately 60,000 liters of fuel and nearly 150 people have been seized during maritime operations.
