Mexico’s National Guard intercept opium shipment bound for British Colombia

Culiacán, Sinaloa — A shipment of opium bound for Canada was intercepted by Mexican authorities after being discovered hidden inside cardboard. The opium gum was found inside the walls of a cardboard box Monday during a parcel company inspection using narcotics dogs.

Personnel from the National Guard seized an undisclosed weight of the opium gum found hidden in the walls of a cardboard box inside a parcel company in Culiacán, Sinaloa. The box, which was filled with clothing, had a label bound for an address in British Colombia.

“As part of strategic actions to prevent the trafficking and distribution of narcotics, foreign currency and firearms, National Guardsmen, with the support of canines, carried out an inspection.

“The shipment, which was destined for an address in British Columbia, Canada, was carrying various items of clothing, however, they (National Guard) identified that the walls of the box were thicker than usual and concealed four bags with a thick, dark brown substance with the characteristics of the drug known as opium gum,” they reported.

The box was seized and made available to the Federal Public Prosecutor’s office in the state in order to determine the exact weight and type of drug, as well as to continue the corresponding investigations.
