Mexico City, Mexico — President Claudia Sheinbaum says Mexico will receive 5.5 million visitors for the FIFA World Cup next year. She says the 5.5 million tourists represents a very important economic benefit for the host cities which are Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey.
Sheinbaum noted that this is the third time Mexico City will host the opening ceremony, adding that the country will host a total of 13 matches.
She says the federal government is investing nine billion pesos in the remodeling of the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) and that the passenger train connecting Mexico City with the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) will also be ready, facilitating connections to the hotel zones.

President Sheinbaum says Mexico will offer visitors a series of tourist routes related to Magical Towns and the Maya Train, as well as various activities at the Marte Military Sports Field, the Zócalo of Mexico City or the “Fundidora” park in Monterrey.
On Monday, she reported that soon she will present the series of activities that the federal government will carry out around the 2026 World Cup, which consists of the construction of fields throughout the country to hold tournaments for children, youth, as well as for older adults and people with disabilities.
“We want sport to continue in our country, and particularly football.”

She referred to the coordination with FIFA Mexico in all aspects of the organization based on the agreement signed by Mexico in 2015. This includes the opening of various spaces so that the entire population can watch the matches safely.
“What we are looking for —and this will also be the promotion— is for all fans to attend the matches peacefully. While supporting one country or another arouses passion, it should be part of the peaceful development of this sporting event,” she said.
Gabriela Cuevas Barrón, Coordinator of the federal government’s work for the 2026 World Cup, reported that the various levels of government are working on a comprehensive plan that coordinates actions in the areas of security and civil protection.

In addition to the stadiums that will host the matches, Mexico is preparing 17 additional sports facilities as training venues and is organizing the Mexico 2026 parties, free public events that will broadcast the matches.
FIFA Mexico’s CEO, Jürgen Mainka, indicated that this edition of the World Cup will be an ambitious event as it will hold 104 matches in 39 days with the participation of 48 national teams.

The three Mexican stadiums will receive more than 800,000 fans in addition to six billion television viewers. The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be held in Mexico, the United States and Canada starting June 11.
