Mexico demands release of two Hamas hostages

Mexico City, Mexico — Mexico has demanded that Hamas immediately and unconditionally release the hostages in its custody, among whom are two Mexican nationals.

Mexico reiterated its call for an immediate and lasting cessation of hostilities in all occupied Palestinian territories, especially direct or indirect attacks against civilians, and for the establishment of a humanitarian corridor, which allows the passage of civilians.

On October 26, almost 20 days after the start of the escalation of hostilities between Israel and Hamas, the 10th special emergency session of the UN General Assembly resumed, entitled “Illegal Israeli actions in Occupied East Jerusalem and the rest of the Occupied Palestinian Territories”, in which more than one hundred Member States of the Organization participate.

In her intervention, the Charge d’Affaires at the Permanent Representation of Mexico to the UN, Ambassador Alicia Buenrostro described the use of the veto to prevent action by the Security Council as unacceptable, given the seriousness and fragility of the situation on the ground.

She demanded from Hamas the immediate and unconditional release of the hostages in its custody, among whom are two Mexican nationals. She also stressed that the Israeli response to these attacks has left more than 7,000 people dead, more than 18,400 injured, in addition to incalculable damage to infrastructure and other Palestinian civilian property.

Ambassador Buenrostro called for an immediate and lasting cessation of hostilities in all occupied Palestinian territories, especially attacks against civilians, by all parties to the conflict.

Likewise, she reiterated the call for the establishment of a humanitarian corridor and for lifting the state of siege in which the Palestinian population currently finds itself, “taking into account that reprisals are contrary to international law.”

It is highlighted that, within the framework of the special emergency session, on October 27, the General Assembly adopted with 120 votes in favor (including Mexico), 14 votes against and 45 abstentions the resolution presented by Jordan, in its capacity of president of the Arab Group, entitled “Protection of civilians and compliance with legal and humanitarian obligations”, which requests an immediate and lasting humanitarian truce, as well as the cessation of hostilities.

Mexico favors a comprehensive and definitive political solution to the conflict, under the premise of two States, that addresses Israel’s legitimate security concerns, and allows the consolidation of the State of Palestine, politically and economically viable, that coexists with Israel within secure borders. and internationally recognized, in accordance with relevant UN resolutions.
