Mayor says city of Cancun has not approved public transportation fare increase

Cancun, Q.R. — Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta says the city has not approved a public transport fare increase as announced by some drivers. Public transport drivers in Cancun have begun announcing a rate increase as of December 10.

Peralta says public transportation fare increases are authorized by the city. She warned that any drivers applying an illegal increase will be sanctioned and also have their concessions revoked.

Some city transport drivers have announced an increase in fares starting on December 10. Notices had already been placed on some buses and minivans informing riders about the upcoming increase.

“The increase requires approval from the City Council. Any adjustment in rates must go through a process regulated and endorsed by municipal authorities as established by the current regulations,” warned Peralta.

The Cancun Mayor says coordination is underway with the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute on surveillance operations to prevent the illegal increase. It is the second time since August that city transport drivers have tried their hand at an illegal rate increase.

In August, the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo) implemented an operation to ensure passengers were not being charged a fare outside the legal price approved by City Council. On their first day of operations, Imoveqroo head Rodrigo Alcázar Urrutia reported out of 10 units stopped, nine were towed from city streets for overcharging passengers.
