Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — PDC Mayor Estefanía Mercado says she has been working with the CFE regarding the power blackout in west Playa del Carmen. On Wednesday, a large area of Villas del Sol was left without electricity.

After hours of waiting, residents began to take to the streets as nightfall arrived. Residents in Xcacel, Misión de las Flores and Paseo del Sisal were affected by the sudden power cut.
On Wednesday evening Mercado stated through a video that her municipal government had maintained constant communication with the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) due to the interruption of electrical service in various areas of Playa del Carmen.
In her message, the mayor reported that the CFE confirmed the restoration of service while stressing these types of power outages cannot be repeated.
“As a municipal government we will take all necessary action because it’s unacceptable for our people to have to live through this. The demand is clear: decent and reliable service for the families of Playa del Carmen,” she said.

Hundreds of residents were still without power as nightfall arrived, prompting the mayor to increase police surveillance in the affected areas.
“We will remain there with constant attention and in contact with the public. We continue to listen to your reports and monitor the situation. The safety and well-being of our people will always be our priority,” she said.
Residents of the Xcacel, Misión de las Flores and Paseo del Sisal began blocking roads Wednesday night in protest of the ongoing power outage. Residents said they have had interruptions in the electricity since Tuesday. By the time they took to the streets, some had been without power for nearly 24 hours.

According to the Municipal Government Director Erwin Aguilar, the blackouts were due to underground work being done by CFE personnel.
