Monterrey, Nuevo León — A Texan was taken into custody from inside the Monterrey International Airport Sunday after a luggage scan revealed his hidden cash.
Members of the National Guard (GN), in coordination with personnel from the National Customs Agency of Mexico (ANAM), detained an airline passenger from Texas trying to enter Mexico with $10,000 USD cash and another 843,000 pesos in cheques.
According to a National Guard statement, “the national guards were carrying out prevention and surveillance inspections in Terminal A of the Monterrey International Airport when they received the report that in the international arrivals hall there was a passenger with cash detected in his luggage through a X ray machine.”
National Guard personnel located $10,000 USD in cash equivalent to approximately 183,800 pesos. In addition, they located three cheques that totaled 843,986.58 pesos.
The unnamed male traveler was unable to prove the legal origin of the money or his declaration approved by the Tax Administration Service (SAT).
According to National Guard, the man “stated that he was unaware that he had to declare the cheques and proceeded to tear them up.”
The traveler was detained for violating Article 9 of the Customs Law of corruption and tax evasion. He was registered in the National Registry of Detentions and, together with the cash and torn checks, was made available to the Federal Public Ministry.
