Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Newly installed security technology around Playa del Carmen has seen three vehicles returned to their owners. On Thursday, city cameras outfitted with license plate readers detected two stolen vehicles.
One of the vehicles, a car, was located in city traffic in centro and flagged as being stolen in July of 2023. The second vehicle, a truck, was picked out of moving traffic along the federal highway for having an outstanding robbery report.
That vehicle was reported stolen in February of this year.
In a note, the SSC (Seguridad Ciudadana Solidaridad) said “Solidaridad Municipal Police secured a vehicle reported stolen in the Centro neighborhood after being detected by cameras with license plate reading technology.
“After receiving the report from C4 of a Nissan brand vehicle, type March, which had a theft report and was circulating on Constituciónntes Avenue, Preventive Police went to the scene and stopped the driver.
“After verifying the car’s data, they showed that it had a theft report dated July 10, 2023, so the unit was secured and made available to the State Attorney General’s Office for the corresponding investigations.
On the same day, “Solidaridad Municipal Police recovered a vehicle reported stolen after being located by surveillance cameras circulating on the Playa del Carmen-Tulum federal highway.
“After receiving the report of the vehicle, Municipal Transit elements went to the scene. After locating the truck and verifying the data, they produced a theft report dated February 16, 2024, for which it was secured and made available to the State Attorney General’s Office, for the corresponding legal purposes.”
Police also located a recently stolen car in the Ejido area of Playa del Carmen.
“The Municipal Police of Solidaridad recovered a vehicle reported stolen in the Ejido neighborhood after it was detected by surveillance cameras using license plate reading technology.
“After receiving the report, Preventive Police moved to Playa del Carmen Boulevard where they located the Mazda 3 and stopped it. After verifying the data, they found that it had been reported stolen on May 26 of this year, so it was seized and made available to the State Attorney General’s Office for the corresponding legal purposes.”
