Cancun, Q.R. — Two top post holders in the Cancun penitentiary system have been fired after a recent prison escape. Officials assigned to the Social Reinsertion Center (Cereso) of Benito Juárez, Jorge Armando López Rosas, the Director of the Center and Sergio Javier Alcalá Encinas, Operational Commander, have both been let go.
The announcement was made Monday after an in-person visit to the Cancun prison by state officials Sunday. The head of the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), Raciel López Salazar, went to the prison to review security footage of the prisoner escape.
On Monday, the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) reported on the dismissal of the two officials.
“Two officials assigned to the Social Reinsertion Center (Cereso) of Benito Juárez, Jorge Armando López Rosas, Director of the Center, and Sergio Javier Alcalá Encinas, Operational Commander, have been removed from their posts while exhaustive investigations currently being carried out by the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Quintana Roo (FGE) continue.
“This action responds to the recent escape of an inmate, whose search remains active in the municipality, in coordination with security forces from the three levels of government.
“The SSC reiterates its commitment to combat any act that puts security at risk and to not allow this type of situation to go unpunished,” they said in a statement.
“Work continues in a coordinated manner with the State Attorney General’s Office to provide all the information and support that is necessary in the course of the investigation.
“The now-fugitive is identified as Gilberto “N”, who was recently charged for his probable participation in events that could constitute the crimes of qualified homicide, rape and qualified injuries against two minors.
“The events for which he is being investigated occurred on October 8, when taking advantage of his family proximity to the victims, he allegedly raped and deprived the life of a minor, while physically assaulting another.
“Citizens are urged to contact the emergency lines #911 and #089 for anonymous reports if they have information in this regard.”
