Institute of Innovation working to liven highway dead zone between Tulum airport and Felipe Carrillo Puerto

Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — A section of highway referred to as a dead zone now has intermittent connectivity. The limited connectivity is the result of the construction of the Tulum International Airport.

Javier Ayuso Sánchez, the Director of the Quintana Roo Institute of Innovation and Technology, says the so-called dead zone has internet service, although intermittently. He explained that they are currently looking for ways to meet the connectivity needs from the airport facilities to the municipal capital of Felipe Carrillo Puerto.

Ayuso Sánchez acknowledged that the population density in the stretch between the Tulum airport and Felipe Carrillo Puerto complicates the process due to the amount of resources needed to install repeater antennas.

“It is important to determine how many antennas are required, but above all, to evaluate the environmental impact in the area. We continue to look for the best strategies to mitigate possible damage to the environment,” said the head of Instituto de Innovación y Tecnología in Quintana Roo.

He also said that the Maya Train facilities in the area could be a viable option for the installation of repeater antennas, however, the corresponding permits are still being processed.

“We hope that before the end of the administration we will be able to finalize the necessary agreements,” he said.

Ayuso Sánchez reiterated that the stretch of highway between the Tulum International Airport, through Muyil to town of Tulum has Internet service, although intermittently.

“At some points connectivity is lost, but users already have access to the service,” he explained.

He says they are also working to bring connectivity to the community of Xcalak, which has been an ongoing demand, but are in need of resources.

“We are waiting for the installation of an antenna. We already have the space and the planning, but we lack the resources. That is the only thing stopping us from providing the inhabitants of Xcalak with Internet service,” he commented.
